Revisiting the Issues
It’s been a long time since we took a look at the major issues and how each candidate would approach each as president. Now that the field is considerably narrowed, we revisit the topic. In general, ideologies are defined by one’s political party (Conservatives tend to be Pro-Life while Liberals tend to be Pro-Choice). But there are differences in how individuals would legislate. Here are five high-profile issues:
Political Issues
Hillary Clinton believes that the wealthiest Americans pay too little in tax. She vows to close the loopholes that allow this category of the public to pay less than the middle class. She calls for a reform of the tax code. More on this topic
Ted Cruz proposes a flat tax, which he believes will lead to a double-digit increases for everyone in after-tax income. He also believes in reform to make the tax code, “simpler, flatter, and fairer.” More on this topic
John Kasich argues that taxes, overall, are too high. Cutting taxes would allow small businesses grow and too stimulate the economy. More on this topic
Bernie Sanders says that large corporations and the wealthy should, “pay their fair share.” He wants to stop corporations from shifting jobs and profits overseas. His plan will implement tax policies that increase taxes for the top one percent of wages earners and the largest corporations. More on this topic
Donald Trump has a 4-goal tax plan: grow the economy, simplify the current tax code, provide tax relief for middle class, and do not add to the deficit. More on this topic
Clinton proposes banning assault weapons, repealing an existing law that protects gun manufacturers from lawsuits, closing the “gun show” loophole and expanding background checks. More on this topic
Cruz is a strict constitutionalist (someone who believes the in a strict interpretation of the law). So, he believes in defending the Second Amendment and said he will not compromise on this issue. More on this topic
Kasich opposes restrictions on the basic right to own guns. He feels that making sure that up-to-date databases of those with mental illness can help reduce mass shootings. Kasich said that “better parenting” is more effective than gun laws in solving problems of violence. More on this topic
Sanders believes that gun sellers should be held accountable if a shooter kills someone. Sanders also said that mental health treatment should be made available to those in crisis.
Trump feels strongly that the Second Amendment protects all of the other rights laid out in the Constitution. He proposes a combination of defending the rights of gun owners and fixing our broken mental health system. More on this topic
As First Lady, Hillary Clinton was focused on universal healthcare for all Americans. She defends the Affordable Care Act but will build upon it to make it more effective. More on this topic
Ted Cruz has vowed to repeal Obamacare and will propose to replace it with a commonplace reform, making his version of healthcare more affordable and portable (from job to job).
John Kasich believes Obamacare should be repealed and replaced because it has driven up the cost of health insurance overall. The Ohio governor proposes the promotion of preventative care. More on this topic
Bernie Sanders views healthcare as a right and not a privilege. He favors a “Medicare-for-all-single-payer health care system.” He believes that the lack for free, quality care for all Americans is tied to campaign finance reform. More on this topic
Donald Trump says he will ask Congress to repeal Obamacare on his first day in office. He will go about replacing it with reforms that, “follow free market principles,” and modify existing laws that inhibit insurance sales. More on this topic
Clinton calls climate change an urgent threat and defining challenge for the nation now. She proposes cutting subsidies for fossil fuels and investing in renewable energy. More on this topic
Cruz says that climate change is a “pseudoscientific theory.” Cruz believes that any action taken toward regulation drives up the cost of living on Americans.
Kasich is the most moderate of his party on this issue. He says that he is, “sensitive to the environment” and open to developing renewable energy sources for the nation.
Sanders say that the danger of climate change is “the single greatest threat facing our planet.” Sanders calls for 80 percentn clean energy resources by the year 2050. More on this topic
Trump consistently denies the existence of climate change, continuously calling the concept a myth and a “very expensive hoax.”
Clinton believes that immigrants, “are vital to our economy.” She supports a comprehensive reform that includes a path to citizenship. On the issue of refugees (from Syria, in particular), she says that the United States has a responsibility to accept them. More on this topic
Cruz says that we need to “redefine” our legal immigration system. He has vowed to “triple border security,” build a wall, and cut off federal funding to any city that defies immigration laws. More on this topic
Kasich, in general, supports a path to legalization for immigrant. But he also believes in the importance of a secure border. He has said that if immigrants are in the country illegally but are law-abiding, they should be allowed to stay.
Sanders says that America cannot turn its back on those escaping violence in the Middle East and supports resettlement of Syrian refugees. He will take executive action to accomplish immigration reform that provides a roadmap to citizenship. More on this topic
Trump has been vocal in his opposition of outsiders in the United States. He has vowed to prevent any more Muslims into the United States. He also proposed building a wall along the U.S./Mexican border and making Mexico pay for it. More on this topic
