Democrats Respond to the President’s State of the Union

On February 24, 2026, President Trump delivered his State of the Union address. This speech is given by the president near the beginning of every year in front of a joint session of Congress. The goal of the speech is to report on issues such as the economy, achievements, and current legislative proposals. The State of the Union speech may also set the tone for the coming year.  

This year’s address came at a crucial time: President Trump’s approval ratings are at or near record lows, and most Americans say that the country is worse off than it was a year ago.  

What Did Trump Say? 

More than 32 million Americans tuned into this year’s speech. During his speech, President Trump described the United States economy in very positive terms. He continued to promote the use of tariffs on foreign imported goods and on his immigration policies. He also emphasized his plans to pass the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship to vote.  

The president also welcomed the U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team, as well as several veterans who were decorated on stage with medals of honor. 

How Did the Democrats Respond? 

Every year since 1966, the State of the Union address has been followed on television by a response from the political party opposite the presidents. This year, the Democratic response was given by newly elected Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger.  

Governor Spanberger’s response mainly focused on the disconnect between Trump’s claim that the United States is experiencing a “golden age” and the reality that most American families are still struggling with rising costs. The governor asked Americans to consider if their lives are more affordable and safer now than they were when Trump took office in 2025. She also criticized the administration’s immigration agenda and the policy of sending federal immigration agents into cities where they have often clashed, sometimes fatally, with citizens.  

In her response, Spanberger was careful to connect Republican members of Congress to Trump and to hold them responsible for policies such as tariffs which are making life more expensive for Americans. 

A Look Ahead? 

As the nation enters the 2026 midterm election season, political experts say that the number one concern that voters have right now is the rising cost of living. Democrats chose Governor Spanberger to deliver their opposition message Partly because Spanberger’s winning campaign last November was focused on making life more affordable for Virginians. Many believe that this is the same strategy the Democrats will adopt to gain Congressional seats in the 2026 midterm election season.  

Currently, Republicans hold 218 seats in the House of Representatives, and Democrats hold 213. That means that Democrats only need to win a few seats in the midterms in order to take majority control.
